Complications of Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is the most common surgery performed in the United States today. While it is generally a very safe and effective procedure, complications can occur, sometimes requiring further surgery. Cataract surgery removes the cloudy lens inside your eye and replaces it with a clear artificial lens. Complications commonly associated with cataract surgery include swelling in the center part of the retina (i.e., macular edema), infection (i.e., endophthalmitis), hemorrhage, retina tear/detachment, & lens dislocation. After a careful examination and diagnostic imaging, treatment plans are individualized and may include topical medications (i.e., eye drops), intravitreal injections, retinal laser, or further surgery.
